Knowledge base article

In my role as the technical writer for the IT service desk at the NC State University College of Engineering, I wrote and published procedural and informational articles for the service desk website. These articles included both internal and customer-facing information. In this customer-facing article, I provided instructions for looking up an author ID during a time when the university was switching from one author ID system to another.

Mobile app and responsive website

In my final project for my Google UX Design Professional Certificate, I designed mobile app and responsive website for a fictional community garden from conception to delivery. As the sole designer, I managed the entire design process, including research, ideation, design, and testing. A comprehensive understanding of  UX compliments and enriches my role as a technical communicator. Documentation is part of the user experience.

Web documentation

I created documentation for the Degree Planning and Advising section of NC State's MyPack Portal, an online portal for students, parents, faculty, and staff. This document was written collaboratively with three teammates. From this project, I learned to write within the constraints of a markup language — in this case, DITA — and to write modular content for reuse. I also learned to use GitHub for collaborative work.

Instructional video

I created an instructional video teaching users how to update their contact information in NC State's MyPack Portal. I learned to effectively combine visual and auditory information for multimedia instruction. I also learned new tools, including Audacity for audio editing and Adobe Premiere Pro for video editing.

Science news article

This project allowed me to try a different kind of writing. I reported and wrote a news article about a recent scientific development at NC State University. I used my listening and interpersonal communication skills to interview the lead scientist, and I used my technical writing skills to create a short, interesting article that makes complicated scientific ideas accessible to a general audience.
